Peak beach vibes in Varadero
Whether you’re staying in Varadero for a week or a month (ahhh, if only!), the beach is sure to be the highlight of your stay, but some of the best times here are found off the coast. Hop on a comfy catamaran and sail through the crystal-clear Caribbean waters to Cayo Blanco where you can snorkel alongside tropical fish. Not down for a dip? You can catch a tan on deck with a delicious cocktail that pairs perfectly with lobster, plucked straight from the sea! While the beach gets plenty of shine (and sun!), Varadero is also home to a lesser known but just as brilliant phenomenon – its caves! A visit to Saturn Cave or Ambrosio Cave, famous for its indigenous wall paintings, makes for a unique day excursion in destination.
More than one way you’re Havana good time
There may be no better place to truly experience the beating heart of Cuba’s culture than Havana. Get a real feel for the island’s charm and people with a stroll along the waterfront esplanade called the Malecón or take a cultural tour through the city’s history. Marvel at Old Havana and its majestic colonial buildings as well as the modern side of the city – or better yet, cruise by them in a classic American car! Bookworms can follow the footsteps of famed writer Ernest Hemingway and check out some of his favourite hangouts like El Floridita, the bar where the infamous daquiri was born. Another can’t-miss experience is a night at Fábrica de Arte Cubano, an art warehouse featuring multiple bars, event spaces, rotating art exhibitions, live music, DJs and more.
Kick your feet up in Cayo Santa Maria
With the likes of Varadero, it might be hard to believe any other shore compares but Cayo Santa Maria is one of the top places to go in Cuba for a beach getaway! You’ll spend plenty of time on the sugar-like white sands, but make sure you also explore beyond the beach for a real treat. While the small cay may not have any true beach towns, Plaza La Estrella is the central spot where you can shop for handcrafted goods and souvenirs, grab a snack and get to know some of the locals (the best part if you ask us!). Nothing says paradise like a bit of pampering and YHI Spa at Meliá Cayo Santa Maria is where it’s at with personalized service, charming facilities that suit the locale and a host of treatments to choose from.
Set your heart on fire in Cienfuegos
If we had to pick one under-the-radar locale in Cuba that we love, it has to be Cienfuegos. Often overlooked compared to the other Cuba tourist attractions, this destination features stunning French neoclassical architecture, nature reserves, historic monuments and nearby beaches, making it a great spot for any occasion, even a destination wedding! Stroll down the Malecón and make your way to the Palacio del Valle, a well-preserved palace you can tour before grabbing a drink at the rooftop restaurant and bar. Or you can leave the city behind and cool off with a dip beneath a jungle waterfall after exploring the lush landscapes of the Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes, a national park that is still safe from crowds of tourists.
