Get the most out of your first all inclusive vacation
POV: you just booked your first all inclusive vacation and you’re gettin’ excited (yay!) but not sure what to expect (boo!). The experts agree: it’s normal to have questions about what to expect, the proper etiquette and how to maximize your experience in paradise. That’s why you’ve got us! With the range of all inclusive resorts and experiences available through Sunwing Vacations, you’ll have a great time no matter what, but as with all things, a little research goes a long way. To get the most out of your first all inclusive experience and leave your worries, responsibilities, who knows even the kids behind, with the help of our Flynancial Advisors (remember, they’re the travel pros!), here’s a list of things to consider during the planning process.
Pack the essentials
When it comes to a packing list, we stick to the scout’s motto: always be prepared! Make sure you pack outfits for hot and not-as-hot weather, rain or shine. Some items are simply non-negotiable, too like those new swimsuits you can’t wait to show off at the beach, a trusty pair of flip flops and a strong SPF. Many of our all inclusive properties feature a range of dining options, so check out the dress codes for restaurants on site as some require you to dress to impress (like no shorts and wear closed toed shoes). If you absolutely must work out – even on vacation, to each their own or whatever – active wear should be worn at the fitness facilities, yoga classes, you get it.
Upgrade – it’s worth it
Go big before you go home and upgrade your stay. If it’s in your budget, reservation upgrades often come with exciting perks such as preferred room categories, enhanced in-room amenities and services, spa discounts, excursions and so much more. Upgrades don’t just stop at rooms, either – you can make special occasions even MORE special, it’s the savvy thing to do. Many resorts like RIU Hotels & Resorts’ properties offer special perks for bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday bashes, romantic retreats and honeymoon packages if your first time to said resorts was to say, “I do.” It’s our favourite way to put the ‘wow’ in “Wow, I can’t believe we get all this!”
Tour the resort on your first day
Once you’ve checked in and unpacked, take some time to explore the resort before settling under a shady palapa on the beach or enjoying cocktails poolside. Walk around and familiarize yourself with the resort grounds, bars and restaurants, lounge areas and the amenities available to you so you have all that you need to enjoy yourself to the max – and you won’t get lost after dark (or after being dazzled by the resort’s evening entertainment!). Plus, touring the property is a great way to get to know the staff at key areas you’ll be frequenting!
Book at least one excursion
Spending your vacation at the pool with a daiquiri and book in hand certainly sounds like our definition of a good time but NexusTours.com, our trusted partner in destination, offers a number of exciting opportunities for you to explore your destination more intimately. Whether you’re visiting a historical site, hiking through the jungle or swimming in one of the most beautiful cenotes known to man, there’s an adventure for every kind of traveller! The key is booking your off-property activities with a company you know and trust, it can save you from unexpected expenses or let downs (like when that “stunning waterfall” is more of an understated trickle).
Bring cash for tips
By definition, all inclusive vacations include everything you need to have a great getaway in paradise, without the hassle. However, while your escape becomes a reality, resort staff are working hard behind the scenes to ensure every moment of your experience is seamless. It’s always good to have some cash on hand so when you’re enjoying the attentive service at the pool, getting knowledgeable wine pairing suggestions at dinner or retiring to freshly cleaned suites, you can show your appreciation with a tip. It’s never expected, of course, but if you’re like us and like to frequent the same resort, it’s a good way to let them know their the reason you keep coming back!
Pace yourself
All inclusive vacations are all about relaxing and recharging; it’s not the environment for a strict itinerary or goal setting (unless your goal is not to set goals). You’ll get the most out of your vacation if you make an active effort to be present in whatever you choose to do and devote as much time as you feel like at the time. When in paradise, the only schedule you should be on is your meal schedule and even then, it’s flexible! For everything else, just let go and enjoy.
