Must-try activities for your Puerto Plata getaway
Located on the north side of the island, the vacation hotspot of Puerto Plata is home to picturesque tropical landscapes and a rich history. With so much to see and do, it can be tough to know where to start when creating your Puerto Plata itinerary. To help you get planning, we came up with a list of must-try activities for your tropical getaway both on land and at sea!
Hang-ten on world-famous shores
Puerto Plata offers incredible water sport conditions, whether you want to windsurf or kite surf. The resort town of Cabarete is just a short drive away, where the annual Cabarete Kite Festival is held every July, attracting some of the world’s most talented kite surfers. The town is popular for its constant steady winds, rolling waves and warm waters – ideal conditions for both amateurs and professionals. Don’t know how to ride? There are plenty of surf schools along the coast that can teach you.
Swim in the pools of a magical waterfall
There are several picturesque waterfalls surrounding Puerto Plata – including the famous 27 cascades of Damajagua – but one of the most famous are the majestic falls of El Limón. Accessible only by horseback or by foot, the journey to the 150-foot-high waterfall will take you through the lush tropical landscapes of the Dominican Republic. The trek is well worth it and once you arrive, you can cool off in the emerald-green pool at the base of the falls.
Power snorkel through the deep blue
Power snorkelling is a unique activity using a propeller that carries you through the water almost five times faster than regular swimming so you can see more of the underwater world! On the Power Snorkel Adventure with Sunwing Experiences you’ll take a short boat ride to the popular site of Three Rocks, home to vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish like yellowtail snappers, rays and eels. Hang on to your power snorkel and discover the deep blue!
Ride a dune buggy through the jungle
Adventure-seekers will love this exhilarating activity that will take you down the road less travelled! Whether you’re riding solo or with a partner, dune buggy tours are one of the best ways to explore Puerto Plata’s exotic countryside. You’ll visit some of the area’s local communities offering a unique blend of French and Creole influences and head to the historic town of Montellano where you’ll tour a historic sugarcane field.
Tee off on championship courses
Golf lovers can choose from several world-class golf courses in Puerto Plata – including the famous Playa Dorada Golf Course. Designed by celebrated golf architect Robert Trend Jones Sr., the 18-hole, par-72 course was named one of the 100 Best Courses Outside the U.S. by Golf Digest magazine. The course is located within the popular Playa Dorada Complex, making it within easy reach of plenty of resorts. Some properties even offer green fee discounts!
