What to know before you go: Puerto Vallarta edition

You think you know Puerto Vallarta, but when it comes to vacationing in one of Pacific Mexico’s top destinations, there’s more than meets the eye. This coastal gem offers a vibrant mix of culture, rich storytelling, cuisine and nature that would make any getaway-goer swoon – we know we do! Whether you're a foodie, a history buff or a lover of the great outdoors, there’s something special waiting for you on your all inclusive vacation in Puerto Vallarta. Do yourself a favour and don’t head down Mexico’s way without reading up on these hot spots!

Walk the walk – the boardwalk

If culture is up there on your to do list, a stroll along the city’s iconic boardwalk, the Malecón, is an absolute must. Stretching along the coast, this sprawling promenade immerses visitors in Puerto Vallarta culture, its art scene and history. Not only will you be treated to breathtaking ocean views, but you’ll also find a series of unique sculptures by renowned Mexican artists, including the surrealist works of Sergio Bustamante. Street performers add a lively atmosphere, especially at sunset when the skies are painted with incredible colours. For a cultural deep dive, check out the Naval History Museum located right on the Malecón…it’s a great way to learn about the area’s maritime heritage.

Get swept up in the Zona Romantica

Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romantica, or Old Town, has more charm than a 90s heartthrob. This is the place to visit if you want to wander along cobblestone streets lined with colonial architecture and feel like you’ve stepped into a history book (no homework will be assigned, we promise). One historic highlight is the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a majestic symbol of the city. This iconic structure, with its crown-topped bell tower, is a must-see for its stunning façade and spiritual significance. If you’re planning a winter escape here, we suggest visiting between December 1 and 12 when the city celebrates the Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a 12-day religious and cultural event filled with colourful parades, music and traditional dances.

Sugar, spice and everything nice

OK foodies, get your bibs out. From high-end dining to low-key street tacos, the culinary experiences here are very diverse so you’ll never need to eat the same thing twice – trust us, you’ll want to sample everything. Start your food journey at one of the many beachside restaurants serving fresh seafood like ceviche and don't miss the opportunity to sample birria, probably the most viral taco on the internet, straight from the source. If you only have time for one culinary venture, we suggest joining a food tour that takes you to local markets, family-run taquerías and chocolatiers. It's an excellent way to explore traditional dishes while learning about the ingredients and techniques that make Mexican cuisine so special.

When nature calls…

While we usually talk up Puerto Vallarta’s beaches, and for good reason, the lush Sierra Madre mountains are the unsung hero of the nature experiences here. This stunning mountain range forms the backdrop to the city and is perfect for outdoor adventures. Whether you’re up for hiking, ziplining or horseback riding, you’ll find something to suit your pace. The jungle terrain is home to exotic wildlife and picturesque waterfalls, like the popular El Eden, where part of the cult classic Predator was filmed – you know, “GET TO THE CHOPPA!” Guided excursions, like those from NexusTours.com, are a great way to not only learn about the area, but they’re fun too – sort of like a grown-up field trip.
