Signed, sealed, delivered: writing the perfect destination wedding vows

Your destination wedding is not only the beginning of your new forever with your one true love, but also an opportunity for you to reflect on how far you’ve come, on the impact you’ve made on each other’s lives and where you wish to go next. Your marriage/wedding vows are your chance to express this love to one another in front of all your cherished friends and family, but we’re not all born with the talent of Nicholas Sparks and knowing what to say or where to start can be overwhelming. Fret not, as we’re here to help guide you with tips on creating the perfect heartfelt vows for your big day in paradise.

Remember where you came from

You’ve gone through many relationship milestones that have helped get you to this moment. Your first kiss, your first family meeting, a favourite restaurant the two of you discovered that became a staple Friday night dinner – and more. We all grow and change in our relationships and reminiscing on those firsts and who you both were back then will make your declarations of love now even more impactful. You can also include mention of any challenges you’ve had to overcome as a couple but it’s best to keep anything that may be too intimate or wouldn’t usually share with others at a minimum – respect the privacy of your relationship above all else.

Be true to your love

It’s important to remember that although your vows are being given in front of your loved ones (unless you’ve opted to run away and elope in paradise, which we love), this isn’t a public speaking event where your vocabulary needs to be essay-worthy. Don’t worry about sounding perfect – use language that feels natural to you and your partner and share genuine emotions that come from the heart. Your person fell in love with you for who you are, so be authentic and true to your personality. Whatever you say and in whatever way you choose to say it, when writing vows that speak to honesty and authenticity, your love will shine through.

Promises to last a lifetime

The commitment you’re making to each other when saying, “I do” is, at its core, a promise that you will love and value each other in your marriage – and your vows can speak to that more in-depth. Think about your shared goals and dreams, the things you want to accomplish as you grow old like seeing the world or building a family, and even the small, everyday promises like always having a hot cup of coffee ready in the morning or never going to bed angry. Be specific about how you’ll support your partner and the life you want to work towards. Nothing is more romantic than hearing the ways in which someone will choose you each and every day.

Surprise or compromise

For some couples, they prefer to save the contents of their love letters as a surprise for the ceremony, while others prefer to write their vows together. This is a decision that you’ll make based on the unique dynamic of your relationship. If you two already speak the same language and trust that your vows will be similar in length and content, keeping them for the big day could be an exciting thrill for you both. If one is more of a wordsmith than the other, restraints like length, general tone or even a shared conclusion would be a beautiful way to build your spoken promises to each other as a team.
